Three Lives
This month we look at the influence of power and it's affect on the law and legal system through three characters who have had plenty of column inches over the last few months.
Lalu Prasad Yadav - Currently Union Minister for Railways
Manu Sharma - Currently appealing against a guilty verdict for murder
Arundhati Roy - Winner of the 1997 Booker Prize and now anti-globalisation/peace activist
Indian law follows English law pretty closely. It is, however, even slower in its progress, somewhat politicised and open to 'influence'. Politics in India is truely murky and some characters makes the EU's worst pilferers look like rank amateurs.
It is hoped that the three characters chosen will show how power can corrupt, how far removed from the law some believe the are (or were), how politics in India is entwined almost as deeply as religion in to the social fabric and that there is hope.
Lalu - A bright and talented politician who moved into an already highly corrupt environment
Manu - The kid with everything but a sense of boundaries or a moral code
Arudhati - Talented and passionate and has followed her own morals.
