This region is rural and mountainous containing several areas of interest for tourists including Simla, the summer capital during the Raj.
Towns cities and hill stations are smaller in this region but accessible by air, road and rail from Delhi and other northern cities.
Further North in the Ladakh region of Jammu & Kashimir is Leh and a predominant Bhuddist influence. The area is dry but for snow fall, the melt water of which feed the rivers. The view over the Himalayas is stunning and Leh is accessible via the road through the passes over Rhotang Pass from Manali, HP or by air.
Uttaranchal was created in 2000 by splitting off the northern portion of Uttar Pradesh.
There remain travel restrictions in Kashmir due to border disputes with Pakistan.
